Puppy Mills On The Rise

Bookmark and Share

Puppy mills are on the rise, on not only farms but also right in the neighborhoods. People have taken a male and a female and bred not for quality or healthy puppies, but for profit. Yes, many breeders are reputable and breed dogs, but they take the time to have vet check ups to ensure the health of the mother and father. They have the puppies checked by a vet and the first shots are usually given.

If you buy a puppy, you want it to be healthy and physically fit. Puppy mills have deplorable conditions as we see many stories on the news about hundreds of dogs being kept in small kennels and only used for breeding. I did some research on such a place in Sheboygan County and was surprised to find out that this place is allowed to continue operation. The pictures are horrible and the news interview with the owner was amazing. He says he is not a puppy mill, but he makes a living breeding and selling puppies. These puppies are born to mothers who are bred repeatedly.

To look at these pictures, one would cry after seeing such inhumane conditions that these dogs live in day after day. Do these dogs have socialization, love, proper grooming and regular vet care? All one can do is pray that these dogs are rescued before any more puppies are born and held there for breeding.

Pet stores will tell you they do not buy from puppy mills, but will not tell you were they get the puppies from. These dogs are kenneled in the stores, watch as people come, and go, but leave them there. Yes, some stores leave the dog out for a couple of hours, but some of these dogs are there for months with no proper training or one on one bonding.

More people have to express opinions about these practices. It is inhumane to keep dogs cooped up in a small kennel with no love and touching. Another reason they stay there so long though is they charge an arm and a leg for puppies. Who is making the bucks for selling these puppies? Puppy mills and stores who buy from the puppy mills need to be put out of the dog selling business.

Everyday a new puppy mill is brought down, but two or three spring up in the backyard of your neighborhood. It is time for laws to regulate breeding of these dogs. Reputable breeders are the ones who register themselves as breeders and only breed healthy males and females. Stop the puppy mills from existing and save the poor defenseless dogs from a life of sadness and deplorable conditions.
